Balsam fir (Abies balsamea) is a medium-sized evergreen tree known for its symmetrical, conical shape and fragrant needles. It typically grows to 14–20 meters (46–66 ft) tall, but can reach 27 meters (89 ft). The bark is smooth and gray on young trees, developing fissures and scales with age. It features flat, needle-like leaves, dark green above with two white stomatal bands below, and slightly notched tips. The seed cones are purple, turning brown and disintegrating to release seeds in September.
