Description

Landscaping: Downy serviceberry, Amelanchier arborea

is a four-season tree offering white flowers in spring, small red berries in summer, excellent fall color, and gray bark in winter.

Downy Serviceberry is a deciduous early flowering small tree with multi-trunks. Best planted in woodland, naturalized or native plant gardens.  Showy white flowers appear in early spring before the leaves emerge. Dark green leaves change to orange-red in the fall.

Wildlife: Birds and small rodents enjoy eating the berries. Serviceberry is a food source for the larvae of tiger butterflies and viceroys.

Economic: Crimson-colored edible berries ripen in June and are used in jams, jellies and pies.

Adaptable: Serviceberries are extremely adaptable to a variety of sites and soils. Growth is best in full sun to light shade and moist, well-drained, acid soils. Downy serviceberry rarely requires pruning.
