The Engineering Assistance Contribution Agreement is a new program brought to Kent County by the KCD. Through this program, KCD has hired two engineers, Daniel Sparks and Erin Thelen, to meet the Farm Bill related engineering needs of Southwest Michigan.
The program, funded by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA), operates a $120,000 grant. In 2006 this grant helped to bring in $850,000 in cost-share to landowners in 19 counties in southwest Michigan. The MDA’s Groundwater Stewardship Program is a major contributor to this grant.
Practices installed through the Engineering Assistance Contribution Agreement in Kent County include: Agrichemical containment facilities, stream crossings, grassed waterways, grade stabilization structures, heavy use area protection, waste storage facilities and more. In 2006, 12 practices were installed through KCD’s Engineering Agreement in Kent County alone.
This program’s contribution to Kent County in 2007 included the installation of 11 agrichemical containment facilities.
