The Conservation Technical Assistance Initiative is a program brought to Kent County by the KCD. Through this program, KCD has hired three engineers and a soil conservationist to meet the Farm Bill related engineering needs of Southwest Michigan. The program, funded by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA), operates a $120,000 grant. In 2009 this grant helped to bring in $175,000 in cost-share dollars to landowners in Kent County alone.
In addition, the engineers provide technical assistance in 18 other southwest Michigan counties.
Practices installed through the program in Kent County include agrichemical handling facilities, stream crossings, grassed waterways, grade stabilization structures, heavy use area protection, waste storage facilities and more.
